It takes love and more to parent an adopted child. To be successful, adoptive parents must be loving, patient, tolerant, flexible, energetic, competent individuals with a good sense of humor. They must possess or be willing to develop special skills/abilities. Successful adoptive families must understand that adoption is a life-time process and must commit through words and action to help children rebuild their self-esteem and confidence.

You can adopt through an Adoption Agency or through the County. In San Bernardino County, an adoptive parent must be a resident age 21 or older, single or marriedin good physical and mental health, and approved by the County Adoption Service. The first step is to call the County Adoption Service and let them know of your interest. Secondly, attend a parenting orientation to obtain general information. You will complete an application and meet with a social worker to discuss the adoption process. Finally, you will participate in an adoptive home study group to prepare you for parenting a waiting child.
